Antietam

Antietam

One day, hopefully sooner instead of later, my wife and I intend on moving overseas, with our time in the states limited, I have decided to use my time off work as well as I can. There are many great places to see all around the US, this includes Maryland.

Last week on one of my days off I decided to trek out to Sharpsburg, Maryland to go around Antietam. The drive is about an hour and change from Baltimore, which was uneventful.

My wife and I watch Ken Burns' Civil War on Netfilx frequently, its good "set it and forget it" tv, but it has made me learn a lot about the civil war, which added to my desire to go to Antietam.

I accidentally entered the park the wrong way, actually it was the middle, so the loop, for me,  started near Burnside's bridge, which was closed for repairs. I took quite a few back-roads outside the park to get back to the beginning.

We have a national parks pass, which gets you into Antietam for free. I went ahead and let them know I had the pass so I was not just stealing wonderful park enjoyment for free. The entrance is right by the Dunkard church, which I have heard about many times on the PBS documentary by Ken Burns: Civil War.

I would highly suggest going here, it is beautiful out there, there is tons of wonderful US history, and the North beat the South, what is not to like?
